Book Banning: Why YOU Should Care with Dr. Melissa-Sue John

Book Banning: Why YOU Should Care, an online workshop presented by Dr. Melissa-Sue John, will be presented virtually via the Woodbury Public Library. Dr. John, a social psychologist, will offer insights about book banning, who it affects, and which populations it targets. She will share ideas on what we can do about it as students, parents, teachers, school principals, board of education members, librarians, and community members.

Dr. Melissa-Sue John is a social psychologist, an assistant professor at the University of Saint Joseph, the owner of the children’s book publishing company, Lauren Simone Publishing House, and co-author of seven children’s books in the Olivia Lauren book series. Dr. John earned her master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, and her bachelor’s degree from Hunter College, City University of NY. Dr. John is passionate about teaching, scholarship, mentorship, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and advocacy. Dr. John primarily lectures Introduction to Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Social Psychology, and Psychology of Women, and has conducted trainings as a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion specialist. Dr. John has a plethora of scholarly publications and business awards. Dr. John was one of five recipients of WBDC’s CT Women Rising Award in 2023. She enjoys traveling the world and spending quality time with her husband, Matthew, two daughters, Olivia Lauren and Alyssa Simone, four sisters, five nieces, and five nephews.
